Roman legionary armour

So, it’s been a while but I recently got a few pieces of kit from Armamentaria which is a UK based site for Roman military kit (and celtic too; well worth checking out!). It’s excellent quality and they were very helpful.

They have also just started a very interesting group focusing on Batavian auxiliary - again, check it out!

Lorica Segmentata

This fits really well, the genius of the armour is the balance. You have more mobility than you think. I love the detail.

Gallic Helmet

It’s surprising how aware you are when wearing it. Previously the Greeks had helmets which isolated you from the battle experience. A legionary spent a lot of time drilling and understanding communications during the fighting so he had to be aware both visually and aurally. Ironically I don’t really seem that ‘aware’ in the pic.

Gladius

One of the best bits - the sword balances well and the scabbard is beautifully detailed

Pugio/Baldric

The dagger (pugio) and balteus (baldric) are also very nice pieces. Never understood what the balteus was for exactly, I know that it was often personalised so perhaps it was a way of the legionary making his kit a piece of his own history. The dagger makes me wince. Reminds me that this was fighting very much up close and personal.
